2018 Wascana Wander – May 26

After the first Wascana Wander in 2017, the event is back!

The Wascana Wander is part trail race, part scavenger hunt. There is no set course (other than on the trails at Wascana Trails). It is meant to get you out on the trails, exploring and trying trails you haven’t tried before. Because there is no set course, there is no specific distance either.

The objective will be to explore the area and find several books that have been hidden throughout the area. Each participant will have a number and will have to bring back the corresponding page from each book (don’t worry bibliophiles – the books on course were destined for recycling anyway).

There will also be a kids version of the Wander. For kids, the course will be marked – with a short distance between 500 and 1000 m.

There is an option for runners to do up to 3 loops (with a new number each loop). To enter the second or third loop, the runner must be within the time cut-off and have collected all the pages. The final loop will be dark so runners will be required to carry a headlamp and cell phone, as well as wear reflective gear. The time limits are 105 minutes for loop 1, 75 minutes for loop 2 and 60 minutes for loop 3.

Where: Wascana Trails
When: May 26
Time: Kids event starts at 5:30 PM, everyone else at 6:00 PM. Be there early enough to get your race bib (bib pickup at 5:00 PM)

Registration is online at Race Roster

Cost: The event is $15 for adults and $5 for kids. Members will receive a full cost discount upon completing the registration, but in order to get your bib – all participants are asked to please bring non-perishable food item for the Food Bank, used clothing for Salvation Army or a donation to the Lumsden Library.

There will also be a collection for anyone wishing to donate to the local library.

2017 Wascana Wander all wrapped up!

Thanks to everyone who came out to the Wascana Wander. It was a fun event and the generous participants made some sizable donations to good charities. I delivered the food to the Regina Food Bank and clothing to Salvation Army. There was 57 pounds of food! And another 39 pounds of clothes! I will take the library donations ($110) this weekend. Thank you!

The Wandering Kids started things off, with 4 kids from age 4 to 12 running a hilly 900 m course very quickly! Thanks to those who helped get the kids event going!

Finisher’s “medal” at Wascana WanderThe adult participants were all challenged to find 8 books on course, with a time limit of 90 minutes. They brought back pages corresponding to their bib number from each book they found. It must have been challenging – no one brought back 8 pages in time! I heard two ran up to 13 km, finding 6 books. Three folks did find 8 books and went out for a second loop, finding one of the two bonus books as well on the second loop.

I have presented the results below with lots of detail. Because there was a time limit, I tried to make it fair to those who returned on time and to those who found more books. A penalty was applied once 90 minutes elapsed and again for every time the person exceeded the average allowable time per book (9 minutes).

RRRC Wascana Wander – April 22

Participants in the Weekly Trail Series the past two years will have had a sneak preview of the Wascana Wander. Now it has finally evolved into its own event!

The Wascana Wander is part trail race, part scavenger hunt. There is no set course (other than on the trails at Wascana Trails). It is meant to get you out on the trails, exploring and trying trails you haven’t tried before. Because there is no set course, there is no specific distance either.

The time limits are 90 minutes for loop 1, 75 minutes for loop 2 and 60 minutes for loop 3.

Cost: The event is free to register, but in order to get your bib – please bring non-perishable food for the Food Bank or used clothing for Salvation Army.

Regina Beach and Wascana Wander – a “social” race

Regina Beach Trail Race is cancelled for 2015. We were initially unsure of trail conditions and while the trails are OK, our race director and host has been extremely busy volunteering with the Red Cross due to all the northern fires. The Regina Beach trail race is definitely not the only event that these fires have cancelled.

The Regina Road Runners anticipate the Regina Beach Trail Race will return in 2016.

We did not want to leave the month of July without an RRRC event, so we are introducing the Wascana Wander – a social race.
